Back in 2013, an Alberton mom honoured her dying daughter’s last wish – to open a hospice facility in Alberton that would take care of people and their families who were facing life-limiting illnesses. At the time, neither Tersia Burger nor the rest of her six-woman steering committee, ever thought that in the four years that would follow, Stepping Stone Hospice would grow to the extent where they, this year, signed off on an annual budget of R16-million!

Stepping Stone Hospice celebrates nurses

In celebration of International Nurses’ Day on Friday, 12 May, the clinical team at Stepping Stone Hospice was treated to an ‘appreciation lunch’ at the hospice’s In-Patient Unit in New Market Park, prepared with love by Stepping Stone’s very own Clinical Services Manager, Sr Sheryl Newman and CEO, Tersia Burger.

I recently attended the Asia Pacific Hospice conference. One of the keynote speakers was Prof Allan Kellehear who has spearheaded the Compassionate City Initiative initially in Australia and the UK and through international Public Health Palliative Care conferences, he is promoting this approach worldwide.

This identifies that if we have a chronic illness only about 5% of our care is provided by the formal health care sector and the major part of an illness, ageing, long-term care, death and bereavement is lived out within families and communities.

Lambano Activities during #HospiceWeek

For #HospiceWeek we held open days at our Sanctuary for the public, companies and medical professionals. On these days we invited people to come and view a short presentation of who we are and the work we do, followed by a walkthrough of our medical facility and an opportunity to meet the Hospice Manager, staff and our very precious patients.
